Freewheel’s Battle of the Brew Clubs 2019
Last Sunday, the skies parted and rain cleared enough for Freewheel’s annual Battle of the Brew Clubs. I shlepped my gear out to represent the Worts and defend Anil and Howard’s title. Grain Trust, Hetch Hetchy, Sudzers, B&S, and a few other clubs were there vying for the crown.
There were quite a few challenges to overcome. It was an extremely cold day (49F) with wind gusts wreaking havoc with the propane burners. I fought through a stuck mash, difficulty getting the mash up to temp (only maxed out at 146F) and it took quite some time for 10 gallons of wort to finally come to a boil. Mental note for next year – most clubs were brewing only 5 gallons and had Grainfathers.
On my left, Anil and Roger St. Denis from Grain Trust were fighting to keep their generator running. Apparently the rental shop forgot to add 2 cycle oil so Anil had to make an emergency run to an auto parts store.
Despite the cold and wind, it was great fun and great company! Hopefully the end product is well worth the effort 🙂
Thanks to B&S and Freewheel Brewery for hosting the event again this year!
