August Meeting
Broken Hydro: The recipe was on email. A simple Pale Ale recipe that the brewer can make two variations with. Tony brewed the default recipe as a control. Mark brewed a no chill version with Kilnsmith 25 replacing the Crystal. (See at bottom for recipe)
Anchor Steam event: Pictures were posted. It was a fun event, not as crowded as feared and they had plenty of beer. We went on the second to last day and they had said the brewed up until Thursday.
NCHF: John has reserved the campsite, C16, for the Thursday. Putting together beer list, ranging from Tony’s Hazy, to S27 wort beers, to Broken Hydro.
Noel’s Presentation: Noel gave a presentation with pictures and slides of his beer journey in England and German. Very nice work and we tasted some German and British beers along the way. Noel noted his new interest in Helles.
Broken Hydro
Inspired by the Mastering the Mash presentation at NHC, this year’s Broken Hydro is about seeing how small variations can change a beer. How a mash temp change or slight hop schedule change can yield different results. We hope all participates can bring their brew to the September 12th meeting.
Here is the base Ale recipe. Brewers can change up to two things:
9.0 lb (88.9%) American 2-row
1.0 lb (9.9%) Vienna Malt
2 oz (1.2%) Crystal 15
16.0 g (36.4%) Magnum (14.5%)
28 g (63.6%) Cascade (5.5%)
Yeast: US-05 @ mid-point temp
Mash: 149F @ 60m
35IBU
Variation ideas can be:
• Ingredient
• Hops type/times
• Different yeast
• Yeast at high, low, or outside of proper temp range
• Higher or lower mash temp
• Length of mash
• … or other variation you can think of
